  • As an Australian citizen you can vote in federal and state or territory elections and in a referendum.
  • You can apply for children born overseas to become Australian citizens by descent.
  • You can apply for a job in the Australian Public Service or in the Australian Defence Force (Army, Navy and Air Force).
  • You can seek election to parliament if you are 18 or over and not a dual citizen.
  • You can apply for an Australian passport and re-enter Australia freely without needing a visa.
  • You can ask for consular assistance from an Australian official while overseas — including emergency passports and help in the case of accident, serious illness, death, civil unrest or natural disaster. You must still obey the laws of the country you're in.
